8 Freunde am São Francisco Fluss

I filmed »8 Friends by the São Francisco River« in 2018. Eight boys play on the shore of the Itaparica Reservoir – with a heavy tyre that, in their game, becomes almost a symbol. The place where they move once belonged to Petrolândia, a town that was flooded in 1988. When the water level drops, the tower of the old church rises from the lake – a visible trace of the past that everyone there knows.

The children know exactly what lies beneath the surface. They live with that memory; it’s part of their everyday life. As they laugh and play, the story of the place resonates – the memory of the sunken town, of families who lost their homes.

What touched me most was how naturally they carry this history. The water covers the traces, but not the knowledge. Their play becomes a quiet gesture of survival – light and sorrowful at the same time.

»8 Friends by the São Francisco River« reveals how life, memory, and landscape are deeply entwined. Where houses once stood, a tyre now drifts across the water – a sign that life keeps flowing, even above what has been submerged.

The film is dedicated to my friend Marcondes Lima, born in Petrolândia and a witness to the flooding.

Ich habe das Video »8 Freunde am São Francisco Fluss« im Jahr 2018 aufgenommen. Acht Jungen spielen am Ufer des Itaparica-Stausees – mit einem schweren Reifen, der in ihrem Spiel fast zu einem Symbol wird. Der Ort, an dem sie sich bewegen, gehört zu Petrolândia, einer Stadt, die 1988 überflutet wurde. Wenn der Wasserstand sinkt, ragt der Turm der alten Kirche aus dem See – ein sichtbares Zeichen der Vergangenheit, das alle dort kennen.

Die Kinder wissen genau, was unter der Wasseroberfläche liegt. Sie leben mit dieser Erinnerung, sie gehört zu ihrem Alltag. Während sie lachen und spielen, schwingt die Geschichte des Ortes mit – die Erinnerung an die versunkene Stadt, an Familien, die ihr Zuhause verloren haben.

Mich hat berührt, wie selbstverständlich sie mit dieser Geschichte umgehen. Das Wasser bedeckt die Spuren, aber nicht das Wissen. Das kindliche Spiel wird so zu einer Geste des Weiterlebens – leicht und traurig zugleich.

»8 Freunde am São Francisco Fluss« zeigt, wie Leben, Erinnerung und Landschaft untrennbar miteinander verbunden sind. Wo einst Häuser standen, gleitet heute ein Reifen über das Wasser – als Zeichen dafür, dass das Leben weiterfließt, auch über das Versunkene hinweg.

Der Film ist meinem Freund Marcondes Lima gewidmet, der aus Petrolândia stammt und die Überschwemmung miterlebt hat.

Filmei »8 Amigos no Rio São Francisco« em 2018. Oito meninos brincam às margens do reservatório de Itaparica – com um pneu pesado que, no jogo deles, se transforma quase em um símbolo. O lugar onde eles se movem pertenceu à antiga cidade de Petrolândia, inundada em 1988. Quando o nível da água baixa, a torre da velha igreja emerge do lago – um vestígio visível do passado que todos ali conhecem.

As crianças sabem exatamente o que existe sob a superfície. Elas vivem com essa lembrança; ela faz parte do seu cotidiano. Enquanto riem e brincam, a história do lugar se faz presente – a memória da cidade submersa, das famílias que perderam suas casas.

O que mais me tocou foi a naturalidade com que elas carregam essa história. A água cobre os rastros, mas não o conhecimento. A brincadeira infantil se transforma num gesto silencioso de continuidade – leve e triste ao mesmo tempo.

»8 Amigos no Rio São Francisco« mostra como vida, memória e paisagem estão profundamente entrelaçadas. Onde antes havia casas, hoje um pneu desliza sobre a água – um sinal de que a vida continua fluindo, mesmo sobre o que foi submerso.
